Приятно четиво

Jack Reacher is like some too-sweet dessert. I can go a while without even thinking about it, but then when I want it, I've got to have it. These novels have definitely improved one by one (I'm betting they will decline too; this is number 10 in the series). I really liked the previous one, One Shot. I'd say this is as good, maybe a little better. The one thing that bugged me was endless turn-by-turn narration of streets and blocks and corners that Reacher was walking in New York. This happened more than once, so the first one I could accept, but subsequent laundry lists of street names got on my nerves. On the upside, there are almost no descriptions of firearms in this one.

Reacher's mixed up with a squad of mercenary ex–Special Ops guys and their vicious leader, whose wife and step-daughter have been kidnaped. The leader has a big apartment in the Dakota, but a lot of the action takes place downtown, around Sixth Avenue and Houston. Reacher's trying to find the kidnapers, of course. Along the way he meets a former FBI agent who happens to be older than he is by about 10 years, but she's exactly his type, so we're treated to another of his tasteful liaisons with a woman who also has to go into danger with him as his partner, not a victim. As usual, the final scene is a nail-biter!

.

Middling Reacher at best. Repetitive writing makes the first half a bit of a slog. I don't remember the other books repeating so much how Reacher always knows what time it is. Also do you need to repeat the title so much? Still Jack always gets his guy and the ending is thrilling enough to bump it up a star.

Nice twist, but not to boast I guessed it before it landed! Another engaging read from Lee Child. A glimpse into the world of mercenaries. Read the book on the edge of my chair, my bed, and my recliner! As always it ended too soon.

Beach read.
