Chief Inspector Gamache and Three Pines are back together again. I'm beginning to wonder if there will be any residents left in Three Pines by the time I get to the latest installment of this series. It seems to be a place people get killed (reminds me of Cabot Cove, Maine in Murder She wrote...ha!).
An old man is found murdered in Olivier and Gabri's pub. No one admits to knowing the murdered man, but Gamache knows some are lying. With the old Hadley House being converted into a luxury spa & hotel, the town looks to become more visible to visitors. When a hidden homemade cottage is discovered, the historical and priceless items inside open up more secrets and more perplexing clues.
Ms. Penny continues to provide a nicely paced mystery with twists and turns that take us to unexpected places. Getting to know the residents of Three Pines, knowing one could be the killer hard to fathom. When it's discovered that the body has been moved not once but twice, that compounds the situation and the motives behind the killing. When the Three Pines resident is arrested for the murder, we just know it can't be. The book ends on a question mark if the Chief really arrested the actual killer.

2nd read
My first read was an audiobook and I didn’t get much out of it. I decided to actually read the book and had a totally different experience. Very good book and great series!

This one was actually deeply sad. Still beautiful though.

This one was not my favorite, but I bumped it up because she did what I didn’t think she would do. It wasn’t someone beyond the pale this time. I would have given up if there were always murders in Three Pines and it was never one of the characters we know. It adds suspense and reality to the series if people you know and love are capable of murder.

Once again, Louise Penny hits it home! Fantastic mystery - constantly veering off in different directions. I love the references to art, literature and history that Penny includes in all of her books. Each time a read a Gamache story, I fall deeper in love with the characters and long to visit Three Pines.
