Here I am desperately attempting to fulfil, to some limited extent, my vow to say something about all I read, and not much more'n a week on there's precious little of Christmas book the third I can summon to say. Let's assign blame equally to Charlie and me: again, we have much ground re-trodden, narratively and thematically; indeed it's interesting to note just how much this series revels in a sort of miserablist mode, indulging in the idea that yes, we might all be stuck in our poverty beyond the point of escape, but as long as we have our virtues of decency and family, we'll be fine together all the same. Simple. Sweet.

It’s okay, more boring in comparison to his first two Christmas books mainly because the central mystery of it is hardly touched upon as ordinary or awkward scenes play out. And it’s wrapped up in a way that makes the otherworldly intervention for a key character less clear than in his two earlier Christmas books.
