I love this type of historical mystery. This one is part of a series of books called the hangman's daughter mysteries and they are all very enjoyable. They are about a family whose father is the hangman of a town in medieval Germany. This makes for a unique setting. Executioners at this time where avoided my the average citizen who superstitiously thought they were trouble. But executioners also had a great deal of medical knowledge so they make a great lead character in a murder mystery.

I received this book through the Goodreads giveaway program. A good story, but I feel that it went a bit longer than it should have. I read the first book in this series many years ago, but I didn't remember many things about it. The characters were decent.
Great series
The history intertwined with the story of the Kuisl’s makes these stories even more real and interesting. The characters are engaging and the mystery as it unfolds is a well written orchestra of events. Great books.

No lie, the afterword of these books are the highlight of my reading. I walk away with so much history to research and read about. I think this was the best afterword of the series (so far). Probably because I like lycanthrope stories in general.
The first 250 pages or so were not very interesting to me. I encourage readers to hang in there though because the last half of the book is worth it! I enjoy these characters so much, they feel very real to me. I cannot wait to see what they get into next.
I have read the first 4 books in this series (the last one in 2017) and picked this one up for the 2021 PopSugar category of a 'book with 3 generations in it". Since it's been a while that I was in stories with the characters, it took ma a little to get used to their idiosyncrasies and over thinking of things.
Once again, the inspiration for this story was something that was based on real history (the Bamberg Witch Trials), but with his creative license of adding a werewolf to the story 40 years after those events. In the other books I wasn't able to figure out "who done it", but as we got closer to the end on this one, I started to suspect who it was, just not why it was happening. Overall it's a good book, but there were places that could have been edited down and to make this a 500 page book instead of almost 600.
