DNF @ 35% - It just got too cheesy for me, all the internal talk about her magic and how she's holding back. I would have liked more background on her as a character. How she grew up, how she discovered she was an Ever, etc.

Also the cover is obviously a girl flipping her hair up - with all the writing about controlling the wind, it would have been better if she was caught mid-spin so her hair had a more tornado feel to it, rather than just a plain hair flip. I do love the background behind the girl on the cover though!

Was excited to read this, as I really liked the concept.
Not my thing execution wise though :(

Maybe I don’t read enough YA, but it felt like she mentioned the same feelings and thoughts in EVERY chapter. Like, we get it - You’re bitter about your situation. WE GET IT. Let’s move on..

Such a shame, I really wanted to like this book. It wasn’t “bad”. Just not what I wanted.

I am gonna DNF every book this year that I am positive isn't going to get better for me and hello babe you're next in line.

This will probably work for someone, and I am interested to see where this author goes - but she's got no idea how to do subtlety at all. It's very clear exactly what the characters are thinking, saying, etc, and we have little to no subtext behind anything. No voices, there's a lot of repetition and whacking you over the head with concepts. Not to mention all the telling and not showing.

I really liked the magic system, atmosphere, setting and descriptions of the world, but this just reads like dumbed down YA and I don't even think this is YA!

I loved Clara and I loved following her journey. The ending was beautiful and tied everything together perfectly. Would've given this 10 stars if I could

"The Nature of Witches" was a cozy fantasy read. Witches' powers are tied to the sun, and each witch is tied to a specific season, except for the Ever whose magic changes with each season. The book follows the Ever as she learns to deal with her powers which hurt the people she loves. It was a sweet story even though it's quite sad and emotional at times.

In Rachel Griffin's book, The Nature of Witches, witches have the power to control weather. They use this power to help combat climate change. However, the witches are not able to keep up with the ongoing damage, and are being depleted as they try to help since witches are only at their full strength during their season. Until Clara, an Everwitch with immense power that she is fighting to control.

Clara is afraid of her power. In fact, she doesn't want it because it seeks out and kills the ones she is closest to. To protect everyone, Clara isolates herself and plans to strip herself of her power during the upcoming solar eclipse.

All that starts to change when Clara meets Sang and starts to train with him. She begins to learn to work with her power rather than fighting against it, and she begins to question whether she can use her power to help rather than hurt.

This is a unique fantasy that weaves in isolation, climate change, having faith in oneself, acceptance, love, and friendship. I really enjoyed how Griffin wove in actual science in regards to the climate and eclipse, and I was rooting for Clara. I am definitely purchasing this for my library, especially since I "discovered" this book from a student who could not wait for it's release!
