Yes, I am a 47 year old woman. This book brought out the 14 year old girl in me and I can't wait to read the second one

It's not often I say I was glad I watched the movie first but in this case it's true. Still I enjoyed Tris as a character more than I cared for Katniss from the Hunger Games. Both future societies are equally absurd but at least in Divergent you have someone who is willing to change her own fate.

Oh boy, so my views on the entire series differ book to book, though, I can comment on how much I loved the first book. Divergent was pleasantly grasping and intriguing the more I read which is hard to achieve for me because I am well grounded with my classic novel roots. It is a classic post apocalyptic tail involving friendships, overcoming difficult times and situations along with a rather steamy YA love affair. So overall, in my opinion, this book is recommendable and definitely a five star for me due to the fact it was everything I expected and hoped for looking into the novel.

I honestly don't know what to say because this book took me right back to my childhood. Still, it is very obviously in the spirit of 2012/2013 and *gasp* I was not surprised finding out that this has been written within 50 days.
Still, I really enjoyed the nostalgia, and it was a really quick read.
a solid 3 star book

I was looking for a faced-paced, entertaining read a la Twilight and Hunger Games. In this respect, Divergent did not disappoint. Laced with social commentary, the armchair-travel of physical risk-taking was pretty enjoyable.

However.

I found the presuppositions about human nature (that the vast majority of humans/Americans demonstrate an incredibly lopsized dominance of one specific personality trait) difficult to accept. It's a great technique for creating identification with the main character, but became problematic when major plot elements relied on this assumption.

If the population was other than human, the author could have given them these disparate dominant qualities freely. But since they were human (and American in particular), the suspension of disbelief took more effort than was necessary in either Twilight or Hunger Games.

I also could have done without the knee-jerk change from adventure-laced-with-romantic-interest to several chapters of romantic-interest-focus. My preference is for these elements to be more smoothly woven together (as they finally seemed to be toward the end).

An entertaining (and clean) read, with a few missteps. 3.5 stars.

There is a lot that I can say about Roth's Divergent, and I don't even know where to start from.

First of all, I never read any of the Hunger Games books, nor seen the movies, so I cannot compare the two series together. I started this novel with a completely fresh mind, free from any prejudice.

I find the concept to be rather silly and absurd. All of humanity, split into 5 factions? Come on, whose idea was this? What about the other countries in the world? What did they do? But anyway, that's the premise that we had to work with.
And then there were all the girly scenes where Tris describes her feelings. Oh please. I found myself thinking "What the hell am I reading?"

BUT... there were times when I was pleased with the direction that the author took. Tris killing Will, for example - this might have saved the whole novel for me. It offered a proper ethical dilemma … save yourself or kill your friend?

If I find the rest of the books at a cheap price, I think I shall continue this series.
