I only recently discovered this author and ‘The Protectors’ series. I was blown away by the first book and I suspected ‘Salvation’ was going to make me feel the same way. Ronan is the man who created the shadowy organization that deals the hand of justice without involving cops, lawyers, or trials. It’s not off-the-cuff, no never that. Each of their targets are thoroughly vetted until everything is known about them and there is no doubt regarding their guilt. I was truly looking forward to getting to know this man and the young man who throws his world into a tizzy.

I’d spent nearly six years transforming myself into a man who would never again be crippled by fear. I could take down any opponent with any weapon I was given and I’d taken the lives of some of the most brutal of criminals with barely an afterthought. And yet, here I stood, afraid to confront an innocent, gentle young man because he held more power over me than any other living soul.

Ronan promised Trace he’d look after Seth but three years ago, when Seth innocently kissed him and Ronan was faced with his feelings, Ronan disappeared. Ronan is no better, in his own eyes, than Trace who returned to Afghanistan and the Army two months after his parents were killed in a home invasion. This left Seth to be looked after by their aging grandmother with declining mental health when Seth was only fourteen. Ronan is disgusted when he finds these things out, angry and furious at himself for leaving Seth alone because Ronan was so wrapped up in his own anger and grief.

Because nothing I’d done had been about protecting Seth. It had been about assuaging my own guilt. It had been about protecting me.

Salvation

I loved Seth & Roman's story! The terror and heartbreak they both have survived make their their HEA even more beautiful! I love that all of Sloane's books can be read alone but that they all have thin ties from one to another. I recommend every book she has written!

I wanted to love this book sooooo much because it has the formula for everything I love. Bodyguard trope, kinda? forbidden love, hurt/comfort, soooo much angst. but I don’t know…I think it was too much exposition and internal monologuing for me. I found myself not getting that invested. also I hate when the true conflict/climax of the plot happens in the last chapter and then it’s all of a sudden the epilogue.

There were so many reasons that I shouldn't have enjoyed this story. There were a few tropes that I don't love that start of this book. I still don't love the premise of the group that Ronan runs, and I don't love the age gap, and I don't love the idea of Ronan falling for his ex's little brother in the way this was put together. But this was still a really emotionally connective story. Despite the age gap and the messy familial relationships, I did like Ronan and Seth together. Both have such tortured pasts, they've been through things that aren't easy to talk about. Both have hidden those things from each other and Ronan has done nothing but run from his feelings for the last three years.

The little bit of a suspense thrown in with someone stalking Seth adds just a enough of something else to keep the story interesting. It gives a reason for Ronan to keep sticking around even as Seth and he are at odds. Ronan is determined to keep his distance from Seth and somehow just can't walk away even as he unintentionally hurts Seth with his reactions.

I found myself liking this story more than I thought I would with all the hesitations I had with the beginning of the story. I do still enjoy the whole world all these stories live in.
