Raw, sexy, and so compelling.  I loved the inclusion of Eva's chronic illness which really helped to ground this book.

Is there such a genre as “dark romance”? Or something similar? Because that’s what this is.

Seven Days in June has many of the ingredients of a more traditional romance, but you can tell from the cover and synopsis that this isn’t going to be your average “boy meets girls, boy falls in love with girl, boy is separated from girl due to external and internal issues, boy reunites with girl.” (Though… that’s the plot at its most basic.)

Eva is the author of a best-selling vampire romance series, divorced mother of one precocious teenaged daughter, and chronic pain sufferer. Shane is a critically acclaimed author working his way through sobriety and trying to help students who need his guidance most. Back in high school (in DC!), Eva and Shane, both outsiders, found solace and companionship in each other, until the fallout of a drug-fueled weekend sent them on separate paths. When they run into each other at an author event in present day, Eva and Shane wonder if their paths can converge once again after all they’ve been through.

Like I said, the cover makes it clear we’re getting more than kisses and snuggles: There’s unbridled passion. There’s angst and trauma and deep currents of emotion: a young boy and an adult man struggling with abandonment, a young girl and an adult woman struggling with unexplained, overwhelming pain. All of this makes this book a compelling, engrossing page-turner.

However, I will admit I struggled with what I perceived as the romantization of a drug bender. It works because it’s part of their journey - together as a couple and individually, especially for Shane. We saw their attraction percolating before they were under the influence - but it still made me deeply uncomfortable, and readers should be warned.

Even with all this darkness, there are moments of levity: humor (especially involving Eva’s sassy daughter Audre) and sweet (and spicy!) romance.

This book has a little bit of everything. For me, it’s a must-read.
