The grudge will always scare me. It was the first horror movie I saw as a kid that genuinely still scares me. This book basically plays out like the movies but was so much more graphic??? I was shocked and it was unexpected. The writing got a bit repetitive and I could have gone without the sexual assault

Despite the harrowing scenes of violence, it’s just so terribly written. Honestly one of the worst I’ve read in a long time.

The book was so scary that I had to sleep with it face down under a pillow. Great book!

Meh. Just watch the movie instead.

Consider me one of those people who found 'The Grudge' to be quite freaky when it was first released. More jumpy than out right terrifying, but I will admit that it made me check underneath the covers before I got into bed for a while.

It was with some trepidation that I picked up this novelisation of the movie, as it doesn't really seem like a plot that could translate from screen to book well. My expectations were pretty low, and they were more or less met. It may not be quite as bad as I expected, but it was definitely 'flat'.

If you don't know the story, it's basically about a woman who dies while in the throes of a terrible rage, and from then on decides to kill ANYONE who is unlucky enough to darken her doorstep. It's a very simplistic story and that is really the problem. We basically follow the ghosts as they stalk and kill multiple victims. It get's to be quite repetitive.

Yes, there are some freaky scenes here and there that are quite effective, the ghost underneath the covers for instance. There's also a little stalker sub-plot that gives creepy descriptions of her breaking into her crushes room and hiding under his bed, then when he comes home later he masturbates without ever knowing she's there. THAT is the creepy stuff (weird how the movie left that bit out!).

Overall, you are better off just watching the movie. *gurgles throat* AAaaa-Aaaa-Aaaa-Aaaaaaa

It was good.

Really creepy.

Unfortunately, it had a BUNCH of spoilers within the book in the form of OBVIOUS foreshadowing.
For example: "little did he know that would be the last time he would see his wife"
DON'T DO THIS!! Now we know he is going to die. Way to bury the lead!

Anyways, besides that, I found this book VERY violent compared to the PG-13 movie. That came as quite a shock, although it is par for the course with the other PG movie adaptations of things like [b:The Hunger Games|2767052|The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)|Suzanne Collins|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1586722975l/2767052._SY75_.jpg|2792775], such cut a lot of violence out.

All in all, good book.

Really great ending.
