3.5 stars. I liked it fine (though it needed work) - not bad for a debut novel.

THE UNDERDOG is the first of three novellas dragging the sweet, dirty, earnest Cameron Wolf through his coming-of-age saga. I am never a fan of using dream sequences to move a narrative, which this book does excessively. They are dropped in the following books.
These three books are really a single narrative arc. If I didn’t have all three downloaded I may not have continued after this first one. Happy I did.

This is an entertaining short novel written for teens (boys especially, if I can be gender-biased without arousing ire) about a lad who's on the cusp of manhood. He's mostly still child, but he's met a girl he likes, he's starting to think about his way of behaving, and he's seeing his family for themselves. There are some very humorous moments in this book, the voice is excellent, and I enjoyed the movement from everyday goings-on to the recounts of his dreams.

Very good written for not so much happening! But what else could you expect from Zusak if not a well written book whatever it's about?

I was drawn to this book because I enjoyed The Book Thief and Bridge of Clay. Zusak has a poetic writing style which made it pretty enjoyable to spend time inside the mind of a teenage boy. Not much really happens in the story. It isn't bad, but it isn't brilliant either.
