Marcus is book one in the Hell Squad series by Anna Hackett.
This was a great start to the series. I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy this title, because I’m not a big fan of the post-apocalypse world, but I soon found myself engaged and entertained.
The world was invaded by dinosaur-like Aliens and not the friendly type. These aliens almost killed off humanity and now what is left are banding together and trying to find a way to end the invaders. It’s war. Humanity’s last chance.
Marcus is the leader of Hell Squad. He’s ruff, tough, and scared on the inside and out.
Ellie was a society girl. She was sheltered, sweet, and innocent until the invasion. Now she’s running communications for Hell Squad.
I liked the introduction to everyone on Hell Squad. Hell Squad is a crazy bunch of people. They take on the most extreme missions. All are hardened warriors/soldiers. I liked the believable dialogue and loved the teasing and banter amongst Hell Squad.
Ellie and Marcus dance around each other, but after a mission that she goes on with Hell Squad, Marcus took action. I liked that we got both Ellie and Marcus’s POV’s. It was fun reading the tough Marcus and seeing his feelings about Ellie. At times his thoughts and words were almost poetic. I also enjoyed the sex scenes. They were well written, placed well, and added to the story.
I also liked that we got some chapters in Gabe’s POV to help us see into him and get ready for his book.
Hackett is a wonderful writer and storyteller. Her characters and world are believable and make me just fall in the story from beginning to end. I can’t wait to read on.

I did like this. I enjoyed the characters, it was a pretty quick read, and while I did enjoy the dynamics of the group, I wish for more. I will read more of this story. I liked Marcus and Elle together.

Great Book
Wonderful start to a new series. Action packed, funny, love story with a great alpha male and very strong female.

Biiiiitch this was so fucking good!
It’s set in a post apocalyptic Sydney where raptor-like aliens have invaded and laid waste to the human race. The story focuses on Hell Squad: a group of soldiers who try to take down raptor cells and turn the tide against the invaders. It’s cinematic as hell and feels like a mix between Independence Day, Jurassic Park, and Transformers!
The romance was really cute and I liked the tension. Elle is a former party girl turned communications officer for the team, and Marcus is a scarred and grizzled former marine who serves as the squad leader. They both have the “they would never be into me

After finishing "Edge of Eon " by this author, I decided to read some of her other books that I have on my Kindle.
While "Edge of Eon" was more engaging, this book was still an enjoyable read with likeable characters and a believable dystopian future storyline. I'm interested in the side characters enough to continue with the series and read their stories.

I am so in love with MARCUS right now! This book was like watching a great action packed alien invasion movie and I can't wait to get more. I loved the backdrop of an alien invasion on earth -- and what unique aliens too! Anna Hackett really came up with some interesting creatures and I'm curious to see if there are more types of aliens that we'll encounter in later books. I would have liked more about the beginning of the alien invasion but we did get a general overview and I imagine more will be revealed in the later books. The futuristic state that Earth was in at the time of the invasion also creates a full world that I'm really interested in. A whole slew of technological advances also gave the humans a fighting chance against the deadly raptors and Hackett did a great job of forming her world.
I adored Elle and Marcus as individuals and as a couple. Elle had a lot of guilt over the party girl she used to be and how she acted during the initial invasion, but she's determined to find her place in this new world and make a difference, especially to Hell Squad, who has become her family. She has no problem standing up to Marcus when she needs to and she can hold her own against the tough soldiers she works with. Marcus was an excellent hero -- strong, protective, a bad-ass against the aliens but always gentle of Elle. When she would doubt herself he was there to boost her confidence and remind her that it's about who she is now, not who she used to be. They're both shocked by their unlikely love under such horrible circumstances but it also gives them something to fight for and a hope that can overcome any obstacle.
The other members of Hell Squad were well represented and I can't wait to read their stories! Out of personal desire, I wish one sad thing hadn't happened, but war is brutal.

“I love you, Marcus.”
“God, sweetheart, I love you too.” His arms tightened around her. “you're mine now. I'm not letting you go.”
“Good, because I'm going to hold on to you too. Whatever happens, whatever we come up against.”

Picked this up as free or 99c. Fun read with particularly nasty alien invaders. This is one of a series, each one focuses on a different couple and can be read as a stand alone. Good character development with a somewhat predictable plot. I'll probably read others in the series at some point, but it didn't grab me with an urgency to continue. 3.5 stars.
Really good story, world building, characters. Didn't think the narrators were all that good, but maybe it's just me. I prefer one narrator, not two.

Look, I'm not generally one for straight up romance, it's just... not for me. But then I found myself 5 hours into a 10 hour flight having just finished one book and the cabin lights were still dimmed and this little eBook was sitting there on my Kindle... And, well, it turns out even an apocalyptic post alien invasion setting isn't enough to make romance a thing for me. Apparently I need characters to have a least half a personality and the plot to be even a little bit complex. Honestly I would have DNF this if I hadn't been stuck in a metal tube thousands of feet above the pacific (yes I had other books on my kindle and yes, I had downloaded it before the flight but shhh), but it entertained me for a few hours and I got a giggle about the action being set in Sydney airport while en route there. But no, this was not my kind read, and unless I find myself on a long haul flight again in the near future (credit card says no...) I doubt I'll be meeting the Hell Squad again.
