The cats have reached a lake which they hope is their new home. However, they need to both divided the territories between the clans and find both a replacement for the moonstone and the four trees meeting place. This isn't straight-forward. Also there is in-fighting between the cats.

Reread: All-Time Favorite

I don't think I can give any book in at least the first two arcs less than five stars. This was a good one and I like exploring the new territory around the lake. I will say that Brambleclaw is an idiot and the miscommunication between him and Squirrelflight is strong in this one.

Also Leafpool's storyline is still vaguely infuriating to me. I wasn't a fan of it before and I'm still not. And it's the foundation for the next several arcs, unfortunately.

I don't have an issue with the forbidden romance thing - I rooted hard for Greystripe and Silverstream and for Crowpaw and Feathertail. BUT. Instalove mixed with forbidden romance mixed with the fact that Leafpool is a medicine cat!? When Crowfeather declares his love and she realizes she loves him back, it's so ridiculous to me. They literally have interacted all of 3 times. Super silly. And yes, I recognize that Graystripe and Silverstream were also instalovey, BUT we didn't get time in Graystripe's head. So it's not so bad.

I think this one is where the authors set the foundation for when they go off the rails a little bit way down the line. It's not enough for there to be plotting and scheming within the clans, and the supernatural elements start to kick up a little bit. Not necessarily bad, but I feel like it makes the whole thing feel a little sillier as we go on in the next few arcs. It's kind of like in Vampire Diaries/Supernatural where they don't want to keep recycling the same plot so they get wilder and wilder storylines. So it's interesting that it starts so early because my brain doesn't remember that, but it is just the foundation here, I think.

Anyway, I still love this series and like all my old favorites, find it really hard to review things that hold such a strong sentimental attachment.

Leafpool is by far my favorite cat of this whole series
