Oh boy, this is a complicated one to get into. Because I liked a lot of this book. There were parts of it that were really, really, really good. I think Nix as a character shone. He was such a good guy and always tried to do his best by Elle (and everyone else he cares for). We see him, much like Seph, grapple with what he wants for his life and what his dad wants for his life. He feels like a real character and very fleshed out and the kind of person you would want to date. He may come off like a douchebag jock, but he's really, really not. And I appreciate that. It's not always fun reading about the assholes.
I didn't mind Elle that much, either. I thought for the most part she was a cool heroine and I appreciated her pink hair and all of the emotional work she had to go through and why she had as severe of trust issues as she did. However, the problem with Elle, is that she never really grows from these flaws? She just... has them and when someone calls her out for them, she'll say "oh shit, you're right." And then go back to being judgmental five minutes later. It happens the entire way through the book, including the ending/third act breakup.
I wish the enemies part of this book lasted longer than it did, along with the build project the book marketed it's blurb after. Because good lord did we need at least a little more buildup from the enemies to friends to lovers thing that they had going on. They were enemies for like five seconds in the book before they were friends and then eventually together. It felt... lacking to me in some way, especially with how Elle always seemed to misjudge and distrust everything Nix said or did. I think a good example of that is the blood drive. Elle freaked out like it was an act of malicious intent that Nix brought all the people to the blood drive. He wanted to help. It's not his fault all of those people were acting like fools. And then, once again, the ending.
But I did give this book three stars, so what did I like?
-the friendship with the boys continues to be grand.
-Berk! I love him and can't wait to get into his book
-JULES. I swear to god if The Third Best Thing is not one of the best books ever, I will be so sad bc I love Berk and Jules so much and their set up is BEYOND good. I can't wait.
-The Nerf battles! Omg those were so much fun to read and I wish we had more of them.
-The running joke of Marisa's bad cooking.
-The friendship between Elle/Jules. I loved seeing them supporting each other, and it was one of the few times in the book Elle usually had her judgement goggles off.
It was still a fun and fast read, and I definitely think worth it. Just know that the least... believable part of it IS the romance.

4 -Para mis series favoritas -estrellas

Phoenix “Nix” Russo es uno de los atletas más populares y queridos de Felton U, excepto por una persona: Elle Masterson, quien está cansada de no poder dormir por las festas que duran hasta después de la media noche. Elle es consciente de que hay quienes quieren divertirse, pero también necesita que sus calificaciones estén a la altura, de lo contario, todos su planes para el futuro se desmoronarán. La pobre chica ya tiene suficiente con todas las actividades extracurriculares que realiza para poder obtener una beca que le garantiza poder pisar suelo firme luego de la graducación. Y claramente no es capaz de hacer eso con todo el escándalo que viene de la casa cruzando la calle, así que después de un día en especial frustrante, Elle llama a la policía sin pensar en las consecuencias para Nix.
Nix adquirió el odio de cierta chica de cabello rosa en su primer año y desde entonces parece que no pueden llevarse bien, pero incluso entonces, él cree que llamar a la policía por una pequeña fiesta es un tanto exesivo. Además, ahora no sólo debe mantenerse cuerdo por la reponsabilidad de continuar con el legado de su padre, sino que debe ganar puntos de niño bueno ofreciéndose como voluntario para construír casas. Nunca se imaginó que la persona que estaría supervisándolo no sería otra más que Elle.
Al trabajar juntos, ambos descubren que no son la persona que el otro pensó, y se convierten en el lugar seguro para desatar miedos y confesiones mientras luchan por la atracción que sienten desde el segundo en que se conocieron.
Fulton U se ha convertido bastante rápido en una de mis series favoritas, con sus personajes dinámicos e historia fácil pero efectiva y debo decir que me alegra haberla descubierto.
Este segundo libro fue más rápido en establecer la relación entre ambos personjaes. Me gustó la actitud de Elle casi de inmediato y entendí de donde venía su ansiedad por ganar el premio y tener estabilidad de nuevo en su vida.
Por otra parte, fue bastante refrescante ver a un jugador que no quería la fama y dinero que la vida de un profesional podría tener. Mientras que el miedo a una lesión es ampliamente explorada en esta clase de novelas, nunca había leído de un jugador que lo sintiera innecesario, algo por lo que no valía la pena pasar, porque si bien Nix ama el juego, no es tan apasionado al respecto como para arriesgar sus próximos años por un par de temporadas de gloria.
Nix y Elle tienen una buena química, sin embargo, creo que me hubiera encantado uno o dos capítulos más en donde pudieramos ahondar un poco más en su relación porque sentí que la escena en donde visitan la escuela primaria (?) llega demasiado rápido y tood se desarrolla de la misma manera desde ahí.
Aunque la problemática es más que predecible, disfruté de leer todo el asunto de Nix recibiendo el premio de Elle.
Una de las cosas que más me gustó y tal vez la razón por la que lo subí a cuatro estrellas, es porque me agradó que fuera Elle la que tuviera que pedir perdoón en dos ocasiones. Me gusta que sea ella quien va a buscarlo. Uno pensaría que esta clase de aproximación no seería tan inusual en novelas románticas cuando es la mujer quien comete el error pero he leído muchas novelas y son pocas las que cargan a la mujer con la misma responsabilidad en la relación como a los hombres. En general, aunque ellos no son quienes cometieron la falta, de alguna manera muchos autores aún así hacen que sean ellos los que busquen solucionar las cosas y sólo entonces, con algo de suerte, obtenemos una disculpa por parte de lla que en su mayoría es dejada de lado por parte del protagonista como si no fuera nada.
Y de hecho, el que Elle sea quien tiene que buscarlo hace tanto sentido con su personaje, y el agonizar pero tener respeto por si mismo es algo que también está en la línea de personaje de Nix, lo que agradezco mucho.
Aunque me dejó una sonrisa en la cara debo aceptar que estaba más pendiente de la relación entre Berk y Jules, tanto qeu no pude esperar demasiado para seguir con la serie. Estoy convencida de que Maya estará un tiempo en mi lista de autores que visito constantemente y la verdad es que no puedo esperar.

3.75 ⭐️ This book was cute! Nix was such a softie and I loved it. Elle was a bit too stubborn for me at times which is why this isn’t quite a 4. But I’m so excited for Berk and Jules:)
