Sturdy and subversive with two fascinating central characters in Margaret and David. Should be widely performed, but you know why it isn’t.

I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about reading a play, but once again (no surprise) Baldwin makes some interesting and complex points of discussion regarding the Black community and the church specifically the role the church plays in it's treatment of Black women. It isn't my favorite of the works that I've read from Baldwin this year, but its still worthy of praise. I'm currently working through his entire backlist with Erica and Josh. most special play to ever exist thank u

I highly recommend the audio as it is a full cast of all the great narrators we know and love!

James Baldwin is a genius as always, but I prefer his novels where he has more room to stretch.

After reading and not really getting into If Beale Street Could Talk, I was afraid that Giovanni's Room was a fluke and that, as beautiful as Baldwin's writing is, maybe the rest of his fiction wasn't for me. But this is a gorgeous play. It's not exactly hard to read a play in a single sitting but it IS hard for me to focus on anything that long these days, so believe me when I say it's so good that I read The Amen Corner in one sitting and didn't even touch my phone. (Yeah, yeah, first world sickness, whatever.) I wish I could see this on stage, I bet it would be electrifying.

A great analysis of the church and a reminder that only people who are with out stones can throw bricks!
