Such an amazing read! The storytelling was sooo good, the book had me hooked from the very beginning (I feel like most books are a bit slow in the beginning but not this one). I love the family relationships in this book and how its these strong generational bonds between women that helps the main character through her struggles. So enjoyable from start to finish.

I liked the characters, storyline, and plot. It was written very well as I could imagine every scene laid out.

But personally, I felt that the ending was a bit underwelming. I still liked it, but my expectations were probably too high.

Overall, it was interesting and beautiful. READ ITTTTT! <3

Absolutely beautiful and chilling prose. This is a profound take on supernatural horror, a weaving of folklore with metaphors of colonization, intergenerational trauma, and cultural resilience. The pacing was inconsistent and eluded me somewhat, but the emotional depth of the characters kept me reading.

I really wanted to love this story, but just found a lot of it repetitive and ambling. Maybe this was the way it was supposed to be written, due to the narrator’s trauma, but I just struggled to stay engaged with the content.

‘bad cree’ at it’s heart is about grief and family, and it does these themes so well. the family unit in this book are EVERYTHING to me, they all adore each other so much it hurts. the characters are definitely the best part about this book, theyre all so genuine and their hurt is so real. the grief and guilt that mackenzie goes through really hit me, i feel that same guilt that she carries and it hit SO hard for me. the writing style made it so easy to read and become immersed in, which really helped the dream sections hit their mark, they got so scary for me at times. it was so heartwarming to watch mackenzie slip back into this life and fall back in love with her family so much that she will fight tooth and nail for their safety. i also might have cried at the end a little🧍‍♂️

A really amazing story told by an amazing new voice in fiction. Utilizing the voices and the myths of Cree legend, this novel had me completely enamoured. The exploration of grief from not just a singular perspective but from how it affects the entire family was really unmatched. My only issue was that this is marketed as horror. It really is more akin to literary fiction with some magic thrown in... If you can set aside those expectations, I would highly recommend.
