I absolutely adored this book! While this is a horror book with aspects of magical realism and supernatural dreams, that's not what it's really about. This book is truly about the impacts of colonialism on a community, the importance of family and togetherness for healing, matriarchy, the detrimental effects of isolation, and how women and family are stronger together. It was a stunning book that I could talk about forever!

even when i put this book down, i can’t stop thinking about it. i love the way it was written, i’m in love with the characters and the family dynamic. kokum especially reminds me so much of my relationship with my nana and every scene with her warmed my heart. but there was much of the book that chilled me to the bone, had me on edge. not your typical spook.

it took me a little bit to get into this book, i wasn’t compelled from the beginning. but i’m very glad that i kept with it because the pace quickened and i became entranced.

A beautiful exploration of grief, sisterhood, family, Cree culture, and the love shared between families.

Not exactly a horror book, though, which is what made me interested in picking this up (and also the Canadian prairie setting), so it took a little bit for me to get into the flow. But that's marketing's fault, not the author's issue.

The characters in this book came to life in my mind and I love that all our major players are women (and I cannot forget our Two-Spirit friend). I could feel the author love of her home as she described High Level. There's a highway called Makenzie there and I bet that's where the main character's name comes from.

There's a few pacing issues and a bit of repetitiveness in the book, however none of that took away my enjoyment while reading it. This first time author is definitely one to keep an eye on!
