This book had some truly terrifying parts to it! Beautiful culture woven into this book & intense tellings of grief. It will make u sad & it will make u scared.
The ending was bittersweet & ALMOST left me disappointed- but it reminded me so much of the ending of Spontaneous & I appreciate it for what it was.
Thanks for da ride

This was awesome!
What I liked:
This was awesome!
What I liked:
- The horror elements here were so creepy and very well-done. The scene where mushrooms start to grow out of Tracey's body made my skin absolutely crawl
- I liked that the crows were almost a character unto themselves, and that Mackenzie's attitude towards them changes over the course of the book. I knew that crows could never be the bad guys
- Probably the best parts of this book were the aunties!! You could feel their love seeping from the page, and each of them were such distinct characters and personalities
- My favourite parts of this novel were the tactile descriptions, and the sensory writing. I felt as if I was there with everything that she wrote, feeling and touching it along with Mackenzie. It felt so authentic, you could tell many of these things came from the author's experiences
- The blending of the magical (the wheetigo, the dreaming) into the everyday was so well-done, and I appreciated the integration of the real-life issues facing Indigenous folks today - MMIWG, generational trauma. The storytelling was sublime
- Loneliness, grief, and love were all described viscerally in this novel. The descriptions, and the emotion behind them, were so palpable they were almost part of the novel's tactile details
What I didn't:
- I wanted a bit more creepiness from this! The horror stuff that was included was delightfully creepy and I wanted even more. I think this book could have been even longer to include more horror
Overall I loved it and I'll certainly be picking up other books by Johns!

A deep and dark supernatural thriller about a young Cree woman who has isolated herself from her family our of grief. When her dreams start affecting the world in frightening ways she has to turn back to her family and heal her relationships in order to heal herself.
I loved the magic of dreams in this world. I also enjoyed the many lovely characters. The theme of how grief and trauma live in the body seems to be, unsurprisingly, reoccuring in Indigenous fantasy lot, and I thought it was perfectly poignant.

The present tense sections I found dull and uninspired, the flashback and dream scenes were more engaging. Overall it was a struggle to read and I skip read the last 100 pages.
