ProTip. If you are going to read a paperback with “reverse harem” on the cover, don’t do it in public. In particular, don’t read it in the doctor's waiting room. You get odd looks. Just saying.
Deamhan City was one of those books that you start and don’t want to put down. Adelyn knows she is different, but with no knowledge of her background, she struggles through life. Life is challenging in Deamhan City, beautifully described as grungy, dark and dangerous. Everything changes when Adelyn meets Diesel, and his brothers.
Reverse harem is a tricky genre – and this book is quite genre-busting and not a typical RH. This is far more complex and detailed. The storyline is fast-paced and engaging, the characters well fleshed-out with backstory and motivation. The characters actions fit their history, which is slowly revealed. This is a wonderful example of paranormal romance, action, suspense. The romance is limited and right at the end, so if you are looking for lots of raunchy action from the start- this is not the book for you. She also does not have multiple partners in this book, but as this is a series, there is scope for that. This IS the book for you if you like well crafted stories with complex characters, evolving storylines, and witty dialogue.
Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop (resulting in a very late night!) I was desperate to see how this ended. You become invested in Adelyn’s journey of self-discovery and acceptance, and this author has done a wonderful job of bringing the reader along for the ride. I am off to read book two, Shifting Isles.

Yikes. I had to check the publication date on this because I could have SWORN it was in the 90s. The MC referring to even the implication that she could engage in sex work as “selling her soul to the devil” and “tarnishing her soul?” Yikes. A character being disgusted when another character implies she might be gay? Yikes. A character with a “hooked nose” who cares about nothing but money? Antisemitism trope, YIKES. Possible they were all unintentional but whew. Do better.
