"Mom you have to read this book!" - my daughter

Cute and sad and sweet kids book.

Not the most cherry of early chapter books, however I do believe there would be readers for it.
hopeful medium-paced

I liked this book, as did my 7 year old. But, neither one of us loved it. It felt contrived with a story that went farther than it needed to or, maybe, not as far into fantasy as it wanted to go. I don’t know. We liked it; it was sweet. The illustrations were gorgeous.

Oh, goodness! I love everything about this book. I love the illustrations. I love the switching perspective. I love how they save each other. I love how mom is honest and raw even though she probably shouldn't be. I love how brave, and strong, and faithful Patrick is.

It gave me all the feels. I almost cried at the end. Which is pretty much the same as bawling my eyes out. I don't cry.

3 1/2 stars.

I like this book. Eoin Colfer is an excellent writer, and this book is no expection. However, I am afraid some of the themes are too mature for the kids who may be interested in reading it.

Montgomery County Public Libraries currently has this listed as an Easy Reader, best for kids around 2nd grade. There is animal abuse and serious discussion of divorce in this book.

In this early chapter book, readers meet Oz (an abused and neglected puppy) and Patrick (a young boy who learns that his parents are splitting up). Together, they provide love and support for one another.

Have tissues handy.

My husband, who doesn't read a lot, picked up this book and read it from start to finish. He said he really liked the illustrations and I agree.

I thought it was a sweet little story, and one that a child could relate to.
