This book was more than what meets the eye. It was a gothic thriller romance, and I realized that once I got past like 20% I was hooked! Now regarding this aspect quick, that first 20% IS a struggle. It’s a lot of background building, introductions to characters, setting the stage. I truly put the book down after the first 15% because I was unsure if it was for me. But I’m glad I came back and finished it because the book most definitely picked up speed and made that little struggle worthwhile!
Rupert (lame name but I got over it eventually) and Vivian have such great chemistry when they’re in the page together! Both are fighting their attraction to the other while also trying to maintain their secrets. Secrets that could end lives. I LOVED the dual POV because it gives the reader pieces of this characters that they wouldn’t offer up otherwise. Also, this is a forbidden romance, so the spice scenes are slow burn and creative for the most part which had me craving more!
The book really highlights the negatives of not only technology but of the affluent in general, which most books romanticize. There is a lot of resentment Rupert has towards his family and it’s something he struggles with the entire book. I think this made me like his character from go. He is the rebel, the smartest one, and the one with a heart.
I did NOT see that ending twist coming. I pride myself on analyzing facts. I thinking ahead, but I was so engulfed in the story that I did not see it coming.

'They were a size XS but would still engulf her. “These are three and half sizes too big,” she stated. “You want me to look like a clown?” '
Is she the size of a child? This part ruined the rest of the book for me. An XS was 3 and a half sizes too big for a grown woman?
Other than this, the writing was great and so was the plot.

This book would not be normally something I’m drawn to, but I am so glad I read this book.I enjoyed the gothic vibe to this book alone with the elite island and interesting family business.
The storyline of the book is nothing like I have read before, it had pieces of romance novels I like for example billionaire romance, touch her and die vibes but also a storyline I hadn’t read before, I really enjoyed it.
The book flowed really well and was a duel pov between Rupert and Vivian. There are some aspects of the book I didn’t like such as the blackmailing between the two main characters but it’s such a small aspect which did lead to some Spicy scenes.
I found that Vivian started off really strong abd had all these good intentions for her family, but as the story progressed I feel she looses her way a bit, but I felt like Rupert becomes stronger and grows on you as the story progresses to balance the two of the out.
Overall I really enjoyed this book, it does finish on a cliffhanger but I cannot wait to see how this story progresses.

4.5 stars
This story pulled me in! My first January James book, but definitely not the last.
In order to help her sister, Viv gets a job on the Isle of Crow, an exclusive island for the rich, working for the Thorn family. The Thorns are a rich, powerful, and secretive family, and will do anything they can do achieve their goals.
Unfortunately for Viv, they're the only ones who have what she needs to help her sister, but Viv's presence on the island, and the job she has as Tour Guide, ruffles some feathers, putting her life in danger.
I loved this dark and twisty ride! The push/pull forbidden romance, the little bit of spice, the secrets and suspense - loved it all!
I knew going into it that there was a cliffhanger but I have no clue where it'll go from here! I'm intrigued and can't wait to see how it plays out.

Thank you January James for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I wasn’t sure what to think of this when I first opened it. Rupert seemed ruthless and mean, I was certain he was going to be the villain in this story. Then comes Vivian and her heartbreaking story of her sister and parents… Oddly enough, when they were together, they worked well together (I mean that a non sexual way). The secrets being kept and the arguments between brothers generationally just made you want to find out what was really happening and why they argued so much.
I do find however, that some of the sexual scenes were too forced.. Vivian is portrayed as this shy petit curvy woman that doesn’t always stand up for herself. And yet, there were moments where she was so brazen I was sure it was part of someone’s dream or fantasy.. hear me out, it was still good heat to add to the book, the beginning of those scenarios though aren’t very convincing. Once the author found her flow again they worked out well.
I would recommend this book to suspenseful romance readers. I look forward to the remaining two books coming later this year!

RIP ….me. I am dead. THIS. BOOK. I honestly had to take a couple of days before writing my review as I was left broken and bleeding on my bedroom floor.
I’m not giving a breakdown of the book you can read that but I was definitely an interesting storyline. I wasn’t sure where it was headed and wow I was 100% not prepared for that damn cliffhanger!!
The chemistry between Rupert and Vivian right from the start was off the charts. His personality left a bit to be desired but he progressed perfectly throughout the book putting him on my “book boyfriend” chart only for me to come crashing down to earth and reconsidering everything I thought of this delicious man.
Vivian’s love and loyalty to her sister endears you to her right away and you’re rooting for her to get the guy and the cure.
I always love an authors portrayal of the “Billionaire Society” out there of just cold, vapid and untrustworthy and in this case…spot on. I enjoyed all of the characters in the book, eliciting a lot of emotions throughout.
If you love a thrilling page turner with twists and turns and that steamy build up, you’ll love this book.
I’m counting down the days until the next instalment comes out because I won’t be the same until then!

This novel is full of intrigue, and long kept family secrets. It also carries the trope for a dark, forbidden love. The Thorn family is known for their large, billion dollar pharmaceutical company. Yet know one has set foot on the island to witness said company, or even take a tour of the island. Until now. Vivian will do anything for her ailing sister, if that means live on a private island for a year as a tour guide so be it.
Rupert is a dark, grumpy, morally gray character. Where Vivian is doing everything in her power to be amazing at her job to succeed for her sister back home. They are like dark and light come together, each with a motive of their own. Yet when the fire is stoked and they finally come together the passion is an inferno. And don't get me started on him calling her butterfly. Ugh swoon. Enjoy!
