I think the truth is, Hal, that you fell for a face and a body and then put the person inside you wanted to find there.

I really enjoyed this book! I had watched the movie first (summer of ‘85) and it followed the plot very closely. I am a sucker for any 80’s gay romance tbh. It’s very interestingly written and a fun read for sure!

I watched Summer of 85 a few months ago and really enjoyed it, so when I found out it was an adaption of a book I had never heard of I had to get my hands on a copy.
In terms of book vs film, it's a pretty faithful adaption, other than being set in a different country.
I liked the narration by Hal, you really get to see the inner workings of his mind in here, questioning himself, reworking a scene to give you another point of view, openly and honestly showing his vulnerable and raw emotions.
I thought the way the book was written was really interesting too, it's a little non linear - we start with the article about Hal desecrating a grave and we go back and forth a bit - with Hals story, it's told chronologically from the moment he met Barry until now, but also there are other bits and pieces weaved throughout from his social worker trying to figure out why it happened after the fact.
I really enjoyed the book, obviously because of how faithful the movie is, there were no surprises in here for me, but I think the addition of a visual representation is a good thing, they both work together really well (which, let's be frank, doesn't often happen when it comes to adaptions!)

Start digging my grave because this book just killed me.
Also, RIP Hal Robinson, you would've loved Tumblr and Hozier

It's one of the pioneering book of LGBTQ+ genre. There is no doubt, this book is one of my favourite reading of the year!
