Another dazzling adventure for the Princess in Black. It is her birthday but monsters keep attacking in the goat pasture wanting to eat the goats. Instead of getting to open presents the Princess must keep inventing ways to occupy her guests so she can slip away to fight. But, as monsters keep attacking will the Princess in Black be able to keep up her charade or will another Princess discover her secret identity?
Good read aloud for ages 5 and up, read alone for grades 2 and up.

Oops, read this one cover to cover with 5yo too. The stereotypes were a bit cringe-inducing here, but the story was cute. Trying to reflect diversity was great, but needed more work. Difficult to rate. Attack move ‘twinkle twinkle little smash’ made 5yo’s night, and she was cackling about it for an hour.

Super cute! I wanted to read it since I've heard such good things about these as beginning readers for kids. I appreciate that Princess Magnolia is a girly girl, who fights monsters on the side.

The early reader books tend to be sparse, so when a seasoned children's author such as Shannon Hale brings out a series it is cause for rejoicing. No matter what your stand on pink covers and princesses may be, this book is a welcome edition.
My 7-year old’s rating and review.
“I gave this book 5 stars because Princess Magnolia kept doing excuses to go fight monsters and it was so funny!”
