I love this series and so does Mae. Actually, I think she just likes my monster voices.
I’m reading this series with my 4 year old daughter. She LOVES them. They have the perfect amount of pictures, to keep her entertained in the adventure.
I was worried that this book would be just like the first one since it started out very similarly, but it went a step further! Our Princess is having a party and she is constantly being pulled away to fight monsters. It is quite funny while also giving insight about the complications of having a secret identity. I also liked the other princesses and seeing a vast representation of races, ethnicities, and cultures.
For: fans of the series; readers wanting a good starter chapter book; readers wanting a fast paced read with a compelling tone.
Possible red flags: loneliness; an emotional outburst of frustration; monster fighting; sneaking and keeping secrets.

The story is probably a 3 star - but the illustrations are so wonderful and my daughter and I really loved Princess Sneezewort.
Feeling very devoted to the Princess in Black. Fly, Blacky, Fly!
Natalie got more Princess in Black books for Christmas, so we're continuing the series together. She doesn't always understand (I think) all of the snide humor, but I'm cracking up as we read.
I received a copy of The Princess in Black and the Perfect Princess Party by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale with illustrations by LeUyen Pham from Penguin Random House Canada in exchange for an honest review.
The Princess in Black and the Perfect Princess Party is the second book in this chapter book series. In this story, it is Princess Magnolia's birthday and she has invited 12 of her princess friends over for a party. She wants nothing more than to have the perfect birthday party but she keeps getting called away by the monster alarm. Trying to enjoy her party while simultaneously fighting the monsters is hard enough but gets more complicated when the other princesses begin to notice her absences.
One of my favourite parts of this story is the introduction of Princess Magnolia's princess friends. They're all so diverse and unique characters that I can see having their own storylines. The introduction of these new characters add to the world and will resonate with more readers who may be able to find a princess who looks like them.

These are still cute. They would be a good choice for kids that can read children's books but are ready for something just a little bit longer. They take me maybe 10-15 minutes to read and have chapters that aren't very long. A good in between type of book before they move on to things like Encyclopedia Brown (are those still a thing?).
