The first adventure of Claudette, wannabe hero and giantslayer. I love these books, their art is great and the humor is for all ages with some great asides for older readers. Her brother who loves to bake and her best friend princess-wannabe Marie, not to mention the pug dog Valiant, are noble and entertaining sidekick characters.
Wow, this book is kinda..boring. Predictable, too. I could see where was going the entire time, and that place was just kinda “meh.” It’s a fairy tale, so there’s some level of “been there, done that” that is acceptable. However, I think most middle schoolers would be like me and see the “twist” coming from a few hundred pages away.
Pun intended.
The action was sometimes hard to follow in the art. That being said, the art was pretty to look at. The big scenes offer enough detail to catch the eye, and Rosado does an amazing job capturing characters’ expressions. There’s one sextet showing Claudette’s reaction to Gaston and Marie, and you can tell exactly how she’s feeling in each frame. It’s cleverly done. Too bad that the writing itself isn’t as good.

Brilliantly plotted, exquisitely illustrated, Giants Beware! is a funny, fast-paced adventure. Recommended to me by my 11-year-old son, I thoroughly enjoyed this romp of a story.
Claudette is a straight-talking, courageous young girl who is anxious to fight the Baby-Feet-Eating Giant who lives outside the protective walls of the city. After repeatedly hearing the stories and legends Claudette can stand it no longer. She tricks her younger brother, Gaston--an aspiring sword-maker and chef and her friend Marie--the Marquis' daughter who desperately wants to be a princess--into accompanying her on her quest to find and kill the giant, thus freeing their town from its fear once and for all.
Both the action and the humor are nonstop right from the first page. Claudette's bravado and spunk make her a stellar heroine. Gaston and Marie are equally engaging, each existing as a fully developed character. Obstacles and surprises await the intrepid adventurers. Rafael Rosado's illustrations are so rich and detailed they practically move back and forth on the pages, quite literally unfolding the story before the reader. The entire book reads like the best Disney and DreamWorks animated features.

Were it possible, I would give this one 2.5 stars. The premise is fun and the illustrations are cute, however the plot holds little surprises, and is predictable right to the end. Furthermore, most,(if not all) of the humor is sarcastic, and would completely escape your average elementary age reader. Personally, I appreciated much of the humor (as it was full of wit and literary jokes). I would recommend this to a picky high school age reader who has a pincheon for sarcasm, and doesn't mind a predictable plot.
Great art and a clever/cute story. A feisty sword-wielding girl, a princess-y (in the very best ways) girl, and a culinarily inclined boy go on a giant slaying adventure. Definitely good for middle grade book talks this year.
The very last page was a bit... strange. Maybe this will be a series?

Review by Cadence: I like this book because it's about friends going on an adventure together to fight something. They get in an argument but stay friends, just like real friends do!
This story is Feisty!
Claudette looks like a boy, but she is all rough and tumble girl - not afraid of anything. Her brother, Gaston, loves to cook and he is scared of many things. Marie is aspiring to be a princess. They are all outcasts in the village. The village is a place with high walls, lots of rules and protected from Magic and Giants. Claudette wants to kill a dragon and so she convinces the kids to go hunting with her.
Claudette is not afraid of anything, much. Gaston faces his fears and he can whip up a great culinary feast on a road trip. They have many great adventures while the men in the town go after the children. They do find the giant and it is a baby giant.
The artwork is colorful and feisty also. I love the expressions on the characters faces. Gaston has some of the best. I love the characters. They are wickedly funny. This is an excellent story for middle grade readers and anyone looking for an upbeat exciting read.
There is a second one of these at least and I look forward to read it.

Extremely funny action-packed graphic novel with likeable characters and vivid illustrations.
