Friendly, approachable, science-based CBT-i (cognitive  behavioral therapy for insomnia) treatment plan. I haven’t felt this good about sleep in years and highly recommend it this book if you are troubled by insomnia.

Not to sound like a robot review, but Hello, Sleep literally changed my life. After struggling with insomnia for five years, I came across this book at my library. I wasn't searching for it, or thinking that help with insomnia could even be found in a book. But I picked it up, along with checking out the audiobook version from the library. 

I listening to the whole book quickly in two days, and was floored by how much of myself I found in this book. After finishing the audiobook, I picked up the physical book to delve in much slower, following the sleep reset in the book and keeping track as recommended. Well, it's been about six months since reading this, and I'm thrilled to say my insomnia as a whole has mostly disappeared. It's still something to work on, but sleeping better is literally an incredible gift. 

The author does an amazing job at explaining themes around the science, and therapy work to overcome insomnia. I'm still surprised I was able to find such help in book form, although maybe I shouldn't be.

This was a very solid look at insomnia, discussing the causes and solutions in plenty of detail. Lots of relevant examples,  brimming with citations, and all the information is wrapped into a fairly straightforward plan to actually tackle these problems. 

It gets a bit repetitive in places, but it's usually fairly well-justified. I think sleep apnea is brought up too often throughout the book considering it's only really addressed in detail at the end. Generally it's well-organized, but the last few chapters feel like a hodgepodge of miscellaneous situations that don't change things all that much. Still, these are relatively minor problems in a very good package.

I got it from the library and am planning to buy it to go through the program in more detail and share information with my wife. Rather than the usual self-help books that provide decent reminders and not much real help, this is actually a really helpful book.

I really appreciate this book. Also that it acknowledges that sleep is a public health issue. It takes into consideration that many studies have been taken but with a limited, white, middle class subjects. The outlines very practical ways to overcome insomnia and how this industry can move forward in the future.

What an informative and interesting book. I learned a lot reading it and some things have most definitely stuck with me. I often think of my sleep bank and the fact that I need to make sure that my days are compiled if things that will help my brain get the rest it needs at night. And sure, we all need some lazy days and that’s okay, too!

For myself personally, following some aspects of the reset for retraining your body and brain for a better sleep caused me anxiety and I was unable to follow through. I read through the process and will maybe try again in the future.

I picked this up because I have friends and family who have struggled with sleep, and I was curious to see what research and advice was out there. This is a reassuring book that debunks a lot of myths and assumptions that the public has about insomnia. For example, insomnia is not the same as sleep deprivation and there are no proven links between insomnia and mental conditions. Another example is that a lot of the emphasis on "sleep hygiene" (dark room, cool temps, etc.) is really not going to help someone who has insomnia or actual sleeping issues. The author reassures the reader that it's not their lack of effort keeping them awake. The reverse is true, and their extra effort could actually be causing them more stress surrounding the thought of sleep which in turn keeps them awake.

There is also a fully detailed sleep plan week by week that you can follow to develop a better relationship with sleep. I sometimes don't like "self help" books because the suggestions are too obvious, but I thought that this book actually showed a lot of new strategies while explaining the WHY behind them. The advice has been used before with good results and it centers on individualizing approaches instead of just giving a checklist of things NOT to do. I really enjoyed learning more!
