In this captivating ya thriller, the thought that fear can be passed down is explored. Kelsey is very protected and limited in the life she can have as a teen. Her life is controlled by her fear mongering mother that never leaves the house. Kelsey gets into a car accident and begins to divert from her routine as she grows closer to the boy that saved her. This results in her mother’s past coming back to haunt them and changes everything she currently knows as true.
This story had action from the being and had me intrigued. Everything seems to make sense but as the story continues holes in the mother’s story begin to come to light. The only thing I have qualms with is that it is never described how Samuel and his crew found where Kelsey and her mother were and why they came at that point in time. Had they been searching the entire time? What led them to finding Kelsey and her mother?
I read it in one night with an audiobook and physical book. I would recommend the audiobook. It was very immersive. I will probably be looking into more books by this author.

This was a bit predictable but still fun. Megan Miranda is a 5 for me.
I wish the ending had been a bit more exciting, but overall a good read!
Interesting concept about a girl who is extremely sheltered because her mother was kidnapped and held captive as a teen, and escaped when she was pregnant. But the truth starts to unravel when the mom, who has never left the house, is missing.
Kelsey knows she doesn't have a normal life. Her mother won't leave the house and they live behind barbed wire fences with exteme security systems. When she comes home one day to find her mother gone, the web of lies her mother has told her unravel and Kelsey becomes the target of the men who harmed her mother years before. Very suspenseful with twists and turns.
A fast-paced read that kept me engaged from start to finish. Despite the quick action, I felt the layers of the story were slowly revealed in a way that kept me guessing and unable to predict how the story would be revealed. An interesting exploration on how parents can shape their children and impact not just their day-to-day, but their worldview.
This book made me more intrigued by Megan Miranda as an author and I'm glad I kept this book on my list after reading Hysteria and not being engrossed by the story.
