Started off fast pace and kept me on my toes! It was a bit anticlimactic at the end. However, overall I really enjoyed it!
So fast paced, energetic & intense! I literally was squirming in my seat & couldn't turn the pages fast enough! Being classified as a YA took nothing away from this fascinating story!
I didn't really care for this book, the plot was highly unlikely and it all felt very rushed. I didn't find the romance between Ryan and Kelsey to be believable either. There's someone trying to get into this safe room but let's kiss and grab each other's hair in the corner while our classmate is bleeding out on the floor...what? Then Ryan confesses to causing her car crash but not to fear, she just forgives him. Just like that. Like all he did was forget to call her or something. I like Miranda as an author but this book was a miss for me.
I absolutely loved the first third of the book - I got goosebumps multiple times reading it, and I had such high hopes for the rest of the book! Unfortunately, the rest was a let down. The book took a weird turn, and it wasn't quite what I was expected. It felt like it dragged on and on after about halfway through, and it seemed repetitive. The big "reveal" felt just "meh" to me. Overall, I wasn't a huge fan of this one.
This book certainly had a good amount of suspense and was a decently paced thriller that kept me entertained. Kelsey and her mom have always tried to live their lives off the grid to hide her mom’s past. Her mom’s fear means Kelsey isn’t able to live a “normal” life and is rather sheltered from her peers, making it difficult to make connections. Until one day when she’s driving home and finds herself in an accident with a cute classmate rescuing her. She slowly decides to climb out of her mother’s comfort zone and find her place socially but when she gets home, her biggest fear becomes a reality — her mother is missing. Kelsey needs to figure out what happened and save herself before it’s too late. The suspense and mystery in this book was amazing, the attempt at romance fell rather flat. The first half was SUPER gripping and enticing but the second half felt rushed at times and a had a hastier wrap up. I loved the simple writing style and it was filled with relatable and insightful kernels about fear and overcoming it.

Once again, I am not disappointed by Miranda. There was mystery and thrill to the story. I don’t know why but I thought the mom was going to be a sleeper agent for a spy network. The writing allowed you to come up with your own theories about why the mom was overly cautious

Megan Miranda is quickly becoming my go-to when I’m feeling kind of down and nothing is really hitting for me. She worked for me last year and she worked again this time.
This book had me GRIPPED. So much happens very quickly right out the gate. The second chapter scared me more than literally any horror I’ve ever read or watched.
The plot overall is pretty predictable. Nothing surprised me. And that’s fine, this is a YA book and also when things happened I was still very compelled by them. Things kept happening but in the end it all fit together, nothing felt like it was just thrown in to add to momentum.
Between this book and the other book I’ve read of hers, it would seem Megan Miranda has a little bit of a villain problem. Both books had a villain confrontation with a gun, both had explanations of plot at that point, and both villains were a little cartoonish. This is not unusual at all for the genre, I think people reading thrillers nowadays expect a villain confrontation like this at the end, but I think they can be better done.
All in all, this book did exactly what I hoped it would. I had a lot of fun reading it and even if the ending wasn’t incredible I didn’t find it took away from the excitement of the rest of the book.

3.5 ⭐️ this book was intense. Very high anxiety for most of it, the ending was a little meh but still a good read overall.
