This is very good for what it is. A collection of interviews. The best parts are the small real insights into who Sondheim is as a person and the reflections from Max. Generally I think it could have used more of the latter

Sondheim's snark and snobbery amuses me (especially since, after seeing Documentary Now's Co-Op the Musical episode, I could hear Sondheim's lines in John Mulaney's voice). That said, I didn't care much for D.T. Max's framing of the interviews. He's determined to get some never-before-seen insight into Sondheim the Man, and introduces each interview as though he were making progress towards "cracking" Sondheim but ultimately arrives at the same conclusion that everyone else does: Sondheim is a complicated guy (like all humans) and very private. Sondheim's last words to him: "End of it! I don't want to be watched."

Interesting book, but the conversations never delved as deep as I'd have like.
