Colditz Castle was the place the Nazis sent POW officers who tried to escape from other POW camps, claiming it was inescapable. While much more difficult, it wasn't impossible. The story about all of the men who passed through this old medieval fortress is just amazing. All of the ingenuity, cleverness, diligence was actually astonishing to me. Macintyre highlights several men, including some of the Nazi overlords, to the point that you really get the sense of them; all different personalities and types. Some you will like, some you won't, but will respect their accomplishments.
Sections follow the years of the war, and the reader will see how things shift as the end draws near, gets more dangerous.

Lots of photos, and some maps included. Would love to visit this area someday.
