"Чайка" ("Chayka")I've heard about this play and always wondered what it was about. It centers on the romantic and artistic conflicts between four theatrical characters: the ingenuous Nina, the fading leading lady Irina Arkadina, her son the experimental playwright Konstantin Treplyov, and the famous middlebrow story writer Trigorin.
Kind of abstract and depressing. I must have read a fairly poor translation too, as in looking around there are many versions available.

Io ho questa difficoltá con gli autori russi, che si ripropone ogni volta che leggo qualcosa, qualsiasi cosa, di uno qualsiasi di loro, chiunque. Sono eccessivi, troppo drammatici, le loro emozioni mi danno fastidio cosí incredibilmente spinte al massimo sia nel bene che nel male. In questo "Gabbiano" di Chekhov le mie sensazioni, che avevo tra l'altro dimenticato, mi sono tornate prepotentemente alla memoria, possibile che sia tutto uno svenimento, seguito da duelli e poi dall'immancabile suicidio? My favorite of the Chekov plays that I've read so far (which is, admittedly, few.)
It had its moments but I certainly wouldn't say I liked it. I just felt frustrated at the end.
This was a good play, like Chekhov's others. Again, the characters are interesting and the dialogue good. This one had more vivid imagery with regard to the setting, but is otherwise similar to other Chekhov plays.
I'm surprised I never read this before, and now I would love to see it performed. I read the Tom Stoppard translation, which I think brings out the humor and ironies as well as the pathos.
