I finished the brick! I was intimidated to start this book for a long time but I don’t think I needed to be.
This was a very solid fantasy book. It did nothing very extraordinary, but if you enjoy high fantasy with politics, some action, and a diverse cast of different characters, this is fun. I was impressed by the cast of characters, most them being very different, coming from different parts of the world, doing different things, and having different personalities and morals.
I did get a little lost sometimes. Perhaps I should’ve listened with more attention to the audiobook but at some point I listened to 10 hours in one day and you’re bound to miss some things. There are several POVs of characters doing very different things in different places of the world and it took quite some time to get the hang of that. It wasn’t made easier by my inability to remember the names of the characters. However, the characters were so distinct that even not knowing their names, I knew who was who most of the time. In the end I always got back into it without having to reread anything.
Now I am proud of myself to have read this. It was a delight.
I have a bit of a hard time pinpointing what I thought about this book. Did I like it? I’m honestly not very sure.
The world was stunning and I had beautiful images in my head while reading. Probably my biggest plus point.
I liked the bickering between the main pair. I went a little back and forth while reading whether I felt their chemistry, but overall I’d say I did.
The plot? I don’t know. I didn’t care all that much. I faded in and out of it.
The weirdest thing about this book was that I could not process the words when reading. It took awfully long to get through a passage. I don’t know what that was. After 30 pages I decided to switch from physical book to audiobook, which saved me and I was finally able to get through it. But even then I noticed myself not processing an unusually big amount.
My rating mostly reflects the atmosphere that was carried through the book, which is what makes this book rememberable.
