Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

This was… This reminds me of that Crown duology where it’s so slow and nothing happens but everyone is raving about it😑 I was bored up until the last 15%!
There is little to no world building, every few chapters you get a specific spell component. The romance was confusing and not believable. I was very confused because she had this yearning for a man and I’m like wait why? There was nothing that gave me the vibe of enemies and hunter lovers lol
The only thing that saved this book is what everyone is talking about. That twist in the end had me shook, I didn’t see it coming and I will be reading book 2. But I’m pissed I bought it lol I’m hoping I like book 2 enough to keep on the shelves🫠
This story was everything I didn’t know I wanted and so much more! The warnings are definitely there, but I think this author is kind of known for her heart wrenching stories. I loved this so much!
The relationship between Max and Ella was adorable and wholesome and understanding. His character was so beautiful to read, he not only had a difficult home life by taking care of his ill father but he didn’t carry that weight to everyone. Am I a sucker for a hurting male character, absolutely! But he stole my heart with all his damn one liners!!! And watching Ella go through her emotional processing was really refreshing, this idea that love will overcome but to never allow herself to fall because love will also kill you (redeeming her brother’s actions). Her growth was also really heart warming to read because I can totally relate, being hurt by a loved one and just being terrified to be vulnerable with anyone. But then together is truly one of my favorite stories!
⚠️ abuse between parent and child, assault, bullying, intended R scene
I am always amazed when an author can write an intriguing and complex story in less than 100 pages! We got all the things we look for, characters with a past and a need, a government system they want to bring down, familial connections, and action. This reminded me of the plot in Chain Gang AllStars which I loved. I’m definitely intrigued on where the brothers journey takes them.
This was a grand ol time! I love when a series is able to truly just wrap it up, web followed the characters,l thru their journey, caught some battles, met some more characters for further stories but I will say…for the big lead up, I was hoping for more from this battle. There was a small moment when I even felt like oooo shit they wouldn’t do that, and then they didn’t lol that would’ve been one hell or a twist. I’m still excited for Iron of Embers and overall really enjoyed Sheurerer’s writing style and will be checking out more books of hers.
4.5⭐️ - reread Ok sooo much better as a physical read, I did switch to audio for the last couple of chapters just so I could finish. I do not like the audio. It just doesn’t give the emotion and quirks I get from reading this story of Ox and Joe. I really enjoyed this and it was a strong 4 star. There was ALOT of time jumping in this book which isn’t my favorite. And his writing is a bit different but it’s interesting compared to his other books. I’m excited for the next installment I’ve already ordered it!!
Ummm maybe I just missed the C Clare train because this was boring. I DNF’d the Mortal Instruments at boom 3 and I’m DNF-ing this because no. It’s a super slow paced story and even at almost half the book nothing has really happened. And I’m just so confused on the hype honestly. If it’s a slow building series cool but I still need something to pull me in and there was nothing here that did it.
This was a book firstly that is way to smart for me! The writing was really beautiful and this concept of falling in love thru letters but for the opponent was really intriguing. But the war and techy lingo went over my head🤦🏾♀️ it’s like I was in it for the forbidden romance but then would get pulled out by the war background. I would definitely reread this and hopefully I can catch more and more.
This was so freaking delightful! This was a perfect balance of magic and cozy. The high stakes weren’t too high, but the cozy wasn’t too cheesy. I loved the quirky cast of characters and the relationships the at were made. So cute and so fun!
