First of all, it’s always beautiful to see these queer organisations being advertised inside the comic and the comic itself giving space to help out queer people in America. I can’t join or donate, but in a time of misinformation and a lot of exploitation of suffering people, it’s nice to see DC giving cloud to reliable sources.

Anyway, let’s get to review. I want to review every short story separately, I will get a bit biased but I hope you can forgive me. /hj

„Hello, Spaceboy“
 Writer: Al Ewig,
Artist: Stephen Bryne
Letterer: Aditya Bidikar

Good start, great start, actually. I like the space setting and I was always a sucker for queer character allegories in science fiction. It’s not really an allegory, it’s not even subtext but I still like it. I love it. Show don’t tell is great for allegories but this time I needed it on the nose. That we have these aliens explain that their situationship on their planet is not as different then to human standards and that the hate is what destroyed them. That connection is the key. Not fighting. That love is more. I love the artist, I recognised the work from DC pride 2021 immediately because god I am in love with that watercolour-ish look. I would love to see more of this duo with queer stories like that.

Just the pacing felt a bit odd.

And the next one just as strong as the first one. I found the pun hilarious with the aromantic character that Aqualad didn’t want to judge the Orion Warrior, for loving battle instead of loving people. As an aro myself.

It’s a story about belonging. Many queer people have hard times with labels, communities and connection. To ask… where is home? Where do I belong as a queer person? Which is my space.

It’s nice to see him struggle and then from water go to the sky. He meets there a folk of people, that are full of romantic love and the guy, that can’t stand these feelings as he‘s married to his profession but still is there with them. It’s home, because he feels comfortable. Which makes Kaldur'ahm realise. It doesn’t matter who you are, it matters how you feel about the place you’re with. That you’re comfortable. And he is comfortable in the waters with his lover. And that’s adorable.

Even tho I don’t mind the jokes the language sometimes threw me off a bit. I can’t place it exactly but it’s a bit wonky, how they talk about queer people and labelling. Can’t place it exactly where tho.

Listen, as I said, sucker for science fiction. Queer people in space is one of the best tropes. Fight with a wall.

It’s funny how you can skip over that dialogue but Poison Ivy framing the police as the reason why the hatred spawns on different planets and the hate is basically financed. While the Green Lanterns would never condone that type of violence against queer people is quite nice. Like the implications here, because they are not far from the truth.

With the first two stories being a bit bitter sweet, we now have poison ivy and her different approach to hate. It just makes sense as long as the hate continues and it’s financed, it will try to spread. And her reaction is to feed these people a bit of their poison. To drug them and make them experience queerness. She’s an anti-hero, it makes sense to her to not reason with them but take more „extreme“ actions. But I think, most of the people that are queer often thought about fighting back with „what if you kissed a same sex person and you would like it? Huh?“

Spite doesn’t get you anywhere but sometimes it’s healing to see, you’re not the only one that feels spite against the people who oppress you.

Little side note. I love the colour pallet for this one especially.

“Steeling Time“
Writer: Jamie Rowser
Artist: ONeilJohnes
Letterer: Jodie Troutman

A little cool down. Still queer but not about big abstract things… but just as important. It’s about the importance of communications. I like that it’s not clear if the main pairing gets back together but they try and evolve. It’s a healthy depiction of relationships and how to go on about it.

Also John Constantine and Xanthe are such a delight. I love their contrast so much. DC pls bring them back!!!

“Bros Down in A-Town“

Writer: Jarret Williams
Artist: D.J. Kirkland
Letterer: Lucas Gattoni

Uhm. What was that… something about this feels so wrong. I don’t know if I am the only one but… from the art to… the writing… to whatever the point of that was. Sorry Jon and sorry Jay but your potential stays missed. The first time I actively don’t like a comic Manga mix… because.. the buffness of the character does not go well with the anime boy faces. Like at all. That’s the black sheep of this pride of sure. Sad that that’s the story Galaxy is in.

Didn’t stick with me as much but I like th Dreamer. Art is solid but I don’t have a lot to say about this on in particular. Other than I need more of Nia.

“Phantom Rodeo“

Writer: Calvin Kasulke Artist: Len Gogou Colourist: Marissa Louise Letterer: Morgan Martinez and Andworld Design

God was that a wall of text. I get it but… I kinda don’t. I hate to see the character of jules being again in a DC pride and barley mentioned out of it. I liked the Rodeo part with the flash clothed goats. I like to see the powers, it’s silly, it’s fun. Nice to see Jay too but way too much words for so little pages.

“Spaces“

Writer: Phil Jimenez Artist: Giulio Macaione Letterer: Frank Cvetkovik

Welp, it made me a whiney bitch and I cried 15 minutes straight. Or god, where do I beging, where do I end … to review this. It’s personal. It’s a personal story… it’s a personal experience… it’s just so personal. But I get it. God, I get it too much. When I am able to reread it I can say more about it. But now I am at a lost for words to explain what this means to me. What this story at large means.

I felt seen. I felt heard. And I felt it too. It’s a beautiful thing.
