Watch Me by Tahereh Mafi
2.5
Watch Me is the first book of Shatter Me: The New Republic. This is a spin off to the series but instead of focusing on Warner and Juliette it focuses on Warner's little brother, James and the serial killer he has hots for, Rosabelle.
I did not like Rosabelle. I think she might grow on me as the series goes on but so far she just frustrated me. She decided to do what the people who were starving her and her sister wanted instead of telling the truth.
I loved James and how he was basically like a mixture of Warner and Kenji. I think he hang around a lot with Kenji and Warner taught him everything. There was a rage inside of James that he's never been able to kill.
I found it sad how James had to pretend around Adam's family just to save Adam's feelings. He could see how it killed Adam to realize he's so messed up. When James was growing up Adam was too busy fighting for their lives to be around for James' childhood; he spend most of his time alone, fending for himself.
By contrast Warner rarely let him out of his sight. Warner taught and trained him. Rebuild him. I loved how fondly James thought about Warner and Juliette. James barely knew Warner when he was eleven but even back then he knew that he didn't want quiet life like Adam. He'd only discovered his powers and family heritage and there was more he wanted to learn, more he wanted to become. He knew he couldn't achieve his goals with Adam, because even then he understood the difference between his brothers. I loved seeing tiny bits of Warner in protective big brother mode even if he was always more worried about Juliette. Like when he thought it was unfortunate development that James cared for Rosabelle.
The romance didn't feel like romance, yet. They were either keeping secrets from each other or trying to kill each other. If you don't count on being attracted to each other of course. Rosabelle did wonder briefly what, it would be like to be loved by someone like James. To have someone always in her corner, someone willing to fight for her. She'd kill for the kind of fierce, unshakable loyalty James showed for his family.
Growing up with Warner and Juliette ruined James for regular relationships. He wanted what they have, so hopefully the romance between James and Rosabelle will get better. Maybe after she learns to trust him.
I hope to see more Warner and Juliette in the sequel. I knew they were married and all but I still got excited when he called her his wife and when she called him her husband. I loved seeing Warner in his protective mode.
All in all I was waiting this book to be more great than it actually was but I did live for every Warnette and Kenji crumb we got.

I wanted to love this book but I'm just so indifferent about Grover and Annabeth and I feel like this book just didn't give me any character or relationship growth. The closest thing we got was Grover talking about his friends going to college and how it made him feel. I just feel like I couldn't care less about Grover and Annabeth and Percy lost almost every single funny bone in his body.
