I just got bored, honestly. I think this book could’ve been trimmed by at least 75-100 pages. I do like Brandes’ writing and the set up of this novel, but I kept having to force myself to read it after the first 25% or so.
Oh my gosh this was excellent! Humor, romance, fantasy, traveling… was near perfect for me. Having older characters was nice, too. Halla was a great lead & I was thrilled to watch her come out of her shell & realize who she is. She’s quick thinking, funny, and curious & she was such fun to follow. And Sarkis.. wry and wonderful, a perfect hero for this book. The supporting characters were fantastic, as was the setting! Loved this book.
This is my first by T. Kingfisher & I think she might be a new favorite! Can’t wait to read more from her.
This dual-timeline mystery was almost a DNF for me. In the first half I only enjoyed reading the earlier timeline. Anything in the modern day felt repetitive and just uninteresting to me.
But I did really love that first timeline and was invested in those characters quite a bit. The last quarter or so of the book was a page turner and I couldn’t put it down until I figured it out. Made me cry.
So all in all a good mystery, but was bogged down in the beginning and middle. It also had more paranormal elements than I was expecting & I wasn’t thrilled with the execution of those.
