I had started to read this book, then stopped because i don't like what I call 'reconstructive' historical accounts wherein the author tries to describe the scene right down to what the weather was like and what length of skirts the girls were wearing. Ho hum. But, since a friend loaned me the book, I persevered. I found the character accounts interesting (in those days a poor person could put themselves through college by working) and of course the final race in front of Hitler. Tough to make rowing interesting (to me anyway), but a half-hour film documentary could tell the entire story adequately.

I agree with some of the other reviews here: not as interesting as "This is Your Brain on Music". He came across as a bit of a name-dropper IMO. Seemingly every 'expert' was his 'good friend'. Maybe it is true, but it got tiresome after a few chapters.
