I think I understand what I really like out of these books. This is another new character who is completely separate from the cast we know (though there is a recognizable cameo) but I found her story more digestible than Reagan’s. The realm she inhabited and the seemingly unfair turn of events that pushed her back to earth gave me fond memories of the goblin market. The dark, bargaining worlds with hyper specific rules and consequences are my favorite to experience because you don’t have to follow a quest to have a story. This was a welcome return to force after 3 or so underwhelming books

Cora isn’t a character I enjoy following very much but I liked getting a peek at the other school and enjoyed that Reagan will enter the fold of our cast from now on. It’s a solid installment but the absence of familiar characters is very noticeable after 2 books. Give me all the strange kids but until Christopher finds his door or Kade has some moment of closure with prism, I’d prefer to not see an ensemble episode without them

I wouldn’t say this story is bad but it’s at a disadvantage because it has to create the emotion connection that already exists in the other “portal episodes” because this is a completely new character. We’re being placed directly in the story of this character but haven’t seen her in our world yet - haven’t been witness to her strangeness before seeing what made her strange. Along with being a stranger, the world she inhabits just isn’t quite as interesting as the ones we’ve seen so far. It’s mostly an easy, pastoral landscape and there really isn’t very much to do or see along the way so it felt like my interest would wane quickly. The ending makes up a lot of ground and you do love Reagan by the end of the book but it’s not the almost cinematic adventure we see from The Moors or the Goblin Market
