I really like this book. It kind of had a few nice lessons in it that I find applicable to myself; learning to accept your past mistakes, working a goal that you had previously given up on etc. The character was very reflective which I really enjoyed but i feel like i was getting 'told' a lot of information about the magic in this world rather than being shown it. Not a huge problem for most of the book but I found it hard to imagine scenes where the main character was using her magic. I REALLY REALLY like this book though and its got lovely world-building.

The Nature of Witches is enchanting, and had me enraptured from beginning to end! It’s a book full of change, and ill tidings, and growth, and destruction, and I found solace in its pages.

Rachel Griffin took the climate crisis, and she took magic, and she took love, and she put it all together with so much care. The epigraphs at the beginning of every chapter; the botanical illustrations at the beginning of every season; the supporting characters and the seasons they personified; everything in this book had so much purpose and care behind it. This book feels like not just a love story between Clara and Sang, or between Clara and herself, but also between the reader and the world we live in.

The writing was amazing, the story was beautiful, and the characters brought it all to life. Five stars.

“A mess is something that needs to be cleaned up. You’re not a mess.” He looks at me then, and his face turns oddly serious. He is no longer laughing. “You’re a force to be wreckoned with.”

This book came recommended in an author newsletter and I knew I had to check it out. Not only do I trust said author, the cover is gorgeous.

The book did not disappoint! It’s YA but definitely more in the older/mature range. There is a climate change message that I thought was very well done. There might have been tears at the end. You’ll have to read it to find out if they were happy tears or sad tears😉.

This book felt like a cozy hug from the earth 🥰 I loved the seasonal magic - every witch's magic is tied to a season and I found that so interesting. It was so cool because each season's witch had such a distinguished personality/magical power - it almost reminded me of the four different hogwarts houses in a way: gryffindor is summer, ravenclaw is autumn, slytherin is winter and hufflepuff is spring (not me trying to tie everything into harry potter haha).

I loved following our main character Clara who is a rare everwitch that can control all 4 seasons, and is the only person who can save earth's climate crisis. I loved seeing her overcome her self doubt + fear as she learned how to control her powerful magic, fall deeply in love with Sang, and essentially save the world.

 Overall Thoughts:
⁕ The book is split into 4 sections to reflect 4 seasons. I understand that this is to show how Clara's magic operates and changes, but the quick passage of time sometimes resulted in rushed scenes and passively explaining the action instead of showing it.

⁕ I feel indifferent about the main character but love many of the secondary ones. Each has unique motivations and experiences when it comes to their relationship with Clara that create such interesting dynamics throughout the story.

⁕ I wish there was more extensive world-building around the history of magic, the founding of the schools, and the conflict between those with magic and those without.

aw my first five star read of the year 🥺 so many quotable/relevant/heart wrenching sentences in this book, tears did fall. I adore the premise, witches and climate change? love it. I liked the plot and I thought it had good pacing. characters were great and I really enjoyed the MCs character growth.

What I appreciate most is Griffin's worldbuilding and the way that she approaches the romantic relationship/characters. I'll be honest -- I devoured this book, and a large part of this has to do with how compelling Griffin makes the main characters struggle, and the way that I rooted for the relationship. I love how multifaceted all the characters feel, the way that it does feel like we're peaking into the world rather than reading something convenient. The magic of the world is interesting and very well thought out.

A couple elements of the novel/plot feel a little bit tacked on and heavy-handed (mainly the message about climate change, which isn't really integrated into the overall theme), but overall this is a solid character-driven supernatural romance. I liked it.
