I actually finished this before the most recent book I read. I actually really liked this one regardless of all the negative reviews it has had. I was surprised to see that they started filming this not far from where I work in Chicago at the beginning of April, and I am quite excited to see the movie now that I have read the book. As most do, I really liked the character of Four. He is kinda something many people want to live up to. He has many likable qualities. I do see what people say about one long initiation, but I really think that is the point of the book. Life for the Dauntless is just one long initiation to be honest. Check it out, its a good read from a hometown author.

My friend recommended Divergent knowing how much I love young adult dystopian novels.
In the future people are divided up into 5 factions. On your 16th birthday you take a simulation exam to see which of these factions you best fit into. Young Beatrice finds out that she has equal aptitude for 3 and is considered a divergent -- something she should never reveal to anyone as being a divergent is considered dangerous. Now she must decide whether to stay with her parents and the faction she's grown up in or switch. Of course she switches and goes into one of the most dangerous of factions -- the Dauntless.
Overall, a good story with solid characters and plenty of action. Beatrice, or Tris as she's known in her new faction, grows up quickly to realize that peace comes at a price. Her training time with the Dauntless proves she's tough and allows her to see human fault in all it's glory (jealousy, hatred, greed). As with Hunger Games, most of the story lines come to a conclusion at the end of the book leaving one very important open to allow for the next novel.
There were times the pace slows a bit and sections where I felt I'd read the same thing in other novels (ex. when Tris is learning how to throw knives). But overall it's a good read and will definitely be reading the second book in the trilogy.

Wow. This book was spectacular. I started and finished it within the space of a few hours because I simply could not put it down.
At first I was a little weary, because when i first started the book, I read the first page and immediately thought "Hunger Games". The writing style appeared to be the same, even the overall idea did as well. But as the book developed, both the story and the style of writing evolved into something so unique and exciting that i just became immersed into this brilliant ORIGINAL story.
I loved the character of Tris, and I loved she eventually gained an identity and learned to be a strong, independent person during her Dauntless training.
i also fell in love with Four/Tobias. He was a deep, multi-layered character that i loved getting to slowly discover as the book went on, as well as his transition from intimidating instructor to the extremely hot and amazing Tobias. I also liked that the author didn't single him out into the role of "romantic interest" from the get-go. So many books introduce the characters and it's basically clear who the protagonist is going to end up with based on the first couple pages. But this relationship was more complicated. Roth kept me in the dark for a few chapters, making me question whether Four was really going to end up as the romantic interest or not. For a brief time i even thought Will and Tris might end up together, but i loved the slow, realistic build up of romantic feelings during the course of the novel. I think part of the reason the nature of the relationship was left slightly ambiguous for so long was Tris's Abnegation up-bringing, which kind of made feelings of intimacy seem almost foreign to her, and for that i have to blame Roth's amazing writing.
The overall storyline, while a little less original, was still chocked with enough twists and turns to keep me at the edge of my seat, and gave enough suspense to make me wonder if the characters would all make it out. There are some novels where it's apparent that the characters will make it out of danger unscathed, but I certainly did not get this feeling this tie, and was concerned about the safety of everybody! (especially at the end sighh)It may just be my inability to see things coming but i TOTALLY did not see two of the major twists in the boo, especially Caleb choosing Erudite, and Four being Tobias. The three deaths at the end shocked me as well (especially Will's GAH!)
overall, this was a great and very exciting book that left me wanting more, and I can't wait to read the next one!

I really liked this book. Usually I am not a fan of the post apocalyptic/future fantasy novels, but this book is really good.
Tris and her serious inner conflict, reflections and doubts make her more likeable, and even though she's often scared to the max, she manages to overcome them.
It's a typical novel where the girl is the badass, where the underdog rises and where lines get blurred between good and evil. It is somewhat of a tear-jerker. but it's not as emotionally loaded.

Waaaaah! I LOVE THIS SERIES. Tris is amazing, she's normal and yet she's not. Her relationship with Four is just... aarghhh. Awesome. I love it. I don't even have the words to describe how I feel about this series. Yes, you can say it's kind of a Hunger Games rip-off, because of the world they live in, but I think it's different. I don't love this more than I love The Hunger Games, absolutely not. But still, I can't wait to read Insurgent!
