The book was over hyped in my opinion. It took a while before it actually became interesting. It’s only like one spice scene. It didn’t give what was supposed to be gave by the TikTok reviews.

here i was just minding my own business thinking i was in the right mood to enjoy a completely goofy chick lit/romance book with maybe a lil angst ~la la la~

then i made the unfortunate mistake in picking this up and instead of a dose of dopamine, right off the bat i'm getting get super didactic political/social commentary shoved down my throat

gimme a fcking break

i didn’t dnf this but that says more about me as a dysfunctional person than anything related to the quality of this book. basically everything about it - the writing, character/relationship building, dialogue, etc, you name it - was like a heat seeking missile fired directly towards the misery centers of my brain. just not at all my cup of tea and unfortunately i came away from this more convinced than ever that the contemporary romance genre today is full of hack authors

This was SO good right up until the end ruined it completely. The characters were beautiful and developed and could stand on their own. They were their own people that existed outside of each other and came together in an organic manner that was somewhat mature.

My complaints lie in the way that the relationship escalated incredibly fast, from saying their I love yous within days and planned a months long trip together within a grand total of 12 hours together. Their being smitten with each other was kinda nauseating but made sense and suited them.

Which is why the end makes no sense to me. After declaring their love for each other, Shane suffers a huge loss and instead of staying by his side and supporting him the way a partner would, Eva comes to the conclusion that they’re just not meant to be together. He’s “not ready to date” and he needs to work on himself?? HELP HIM BY BEING THERE FOR HIM. You’re here for the people you love, that’s how relationships work. It just feels like no one is actually there for Shane but Shane is always there for Eva when she needs it. If it hadn’t been for the ending, Eva would have been such a great character.

Idk, the ending kind of soured the entire book for me.

I have mixed feelings about this book and I suspect it's because I'm not sure if the author knew what she intended to write. Occasionally it's a light romance, more often it's a dark commentary on society, and it all felt a bit disjointed to me. Is it trying to be a summer read? Because it failed, if that was its intent.

I liked the characters - especially Audre, but disliked how both Eva and Shane has such stereotypical childhoods. All the cultural references felt both heavy-handed and {soon to be} dated to me. It was as if the author's primary intention was to show us how with-it she is.

I thought the narrator did a terrific job. And I hate the cover.

Slow to start but picked up about halfway through. Couldn’t stop once I got to that point. In the end, I was pleased. This is why I’m a hopeless romantic.
