I only even read this because it was free and available on Libby. I really really hoped it got better from the first one. It's really such a cool premise. But the writing has officially lost me. I was going to DNF at like 20% but held out hope that at least the plot would be worth it. I was unfortunately disappointed. I was moderately entertained and it was a quick read but it will be one of the few series of my reading journey I have no interest in continuing with.

This book felt so different from the first one. I really enjoyed the first one, the pacing and characters were great. And the chemistry was so good between Quinn and Lazarus.
This one was a transition book with not a lot going on. The little action that happens near the end is cleared up really quick (within a handful of pages). This book also didn't focus on the relationship between our main characters much at all, and more so focused on them waiting to speak to the Pirate Queen. The writing felt different, younger or rushed perhaps, and I struggled to stay engaged. I've heard a bit about the third book in this series so I pushed through. It's a shame because you'd think a book about a Pirate Queen's kingdom would be fun.
Overall, I was kinda disappointed. this was a bit boring for me and it felt like it dragged on despite not being that long of a book.

This felt like an episode of a TV show with a self-contained plot. There did not feel like there was advancement of the overall plot. The FMC continues to be emotionally detached with no character growth. I did enjoy the side characters introduced in this book and as a side plot it was satisfying if predictable.

I give this book 3.5 stars. The plot was intriguing, and I enjoyed the darker tone of the story, but I had a hard time connecting with Quinn. Her stubbornness and constant disrespect felt more obnoxious than empowering at times, making it difficult to root for her. While I appreciate strong, independent characters, there’s a fine line between confident and insufferable, and Quinn leaned too far into the latter for me.
The writing itself was solid, and the pacing kept things moving, but the character dynamics could have used more depth. Overall, it’s a decent read with potential, but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

Heroine is pretty edgy, I kinda like how dark it is, but after forgetting to update and review it, I kinda forgot about it cause it was pretty short, I feel like I need to binge this series to truly love it. I do still like the interesting magic here though and how the main characters are so attracted to each other bc of their unique powers
I am really enjoying this series. Review to come.

This book was much like the first in the series. There were things I liked, but mostly it just left me feeling unfullfilled. Emotions didn't feel quite real. The "action" felt forced and sporadic. I want to like this series, but it just doesn't measure up to it's promise.
