This book is very compact and has so much in it to understand. I am constantly confused by what moves White people in this age of highly documented racism but this book addresses the normalization of racism in so many ways in our art, in our education systems and in our culture. What sticks with me is the fact that people of culture can now move out of story, personal, generational or otherwise, and see the documented lynchings of people of color daily. We have videos and dash cameras and body cameras. White people can see them too but seem to only be moved if the facts are just right. I can’t imagine how it must feel to see clearly documented murders by people paid to serve and protect and the watch our white communities do next to nothing. It is like living through a thousand cuts.

Aw the deep love of the poetic flourish. It is very prevalent in this book and very painful. Sweat pools like gravy. Statues wrenching up something dark. Fog hovering over the ground like a ghost. It is such a strange flow of writing in this story and it doesn’t really add anything for the reader. It didn’t help me understand place or characters better. In fact the narrator is so straight forward in other parts though things are always coming back to her sleep addled mind that is it just feels inconsistent.
Part of this story I feel pretty sure was a part of a Grey’s Anatomy episode twenty years ago. But all of that said I did want to finish it to make sure I guessed the conclusion right and I did. So 2 stars for making me want to the know the ending.
